I find it to be much less chaotic. Also being able to comment on friends mini feed items (like wall posts or status updates) gives a clear sense of context I believe the usability is higher on the new design, but like you said, with change will come a severe dip in efficiency and perceived usability. It just isn't intuitive, and I don't really *want* to use Facebook for much beyond keeping touch with people in my life.
